Siberian ginseng or eleuthero is found in the wild in the Russian taiga, and differs from the main species of panax ginseng as it belongs to another classification system, and consists of a different composition of the active ingredients. However, with regard to the effects, the roots of eleuthero have the same properties as panax ginseng.
Russian botanists gave it its first botanical name: Hedera senticosus in 1856. Just three years after, the botanist Maximowicz removed the plant from the Hedera genus and created a new genre Eleutherococcus, naming it Eleutherococcus senticosus. In the same year a German botanist joined the genus Eleutherococcus to the genus Acanothopanax previously a subgenus of Panax. Although most botanists now use the genus Eleutherococcus, in German and Chinese circles the plant is recognised as Acanthopanax senticosus.
An important immunostimulant, it is used mainly in cases of asthenia and convalescence from infectious diseases and/or tumours.
