Red Juniper

The Red Juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus) is an evergreen shrub belonging to the Cupressaceae family native to the northern hemisphere and southern Europe. Mostly harvested in Italy, France and Austria, it often reaches a height of 6 metres with narrow bluish-green needle-shaped leaves and berries initially greenish-yellow, and reddish-brown when ripe. Also known as Juniper Tar.

Species native to the Mediterranean area and found in Morocco, Portugal, France, Iran, southern Lebanon and Israel. It is found on rocky terrain, from sea level up to 1600 metres above sea level. It is a characteristic species of the Mediterranean scrub.
Red Juniper has been used since ancient times to soothe skin and scalp problems such as psoriasis, dandruff and eczema. The essential oil has a strong and persistent smell of burnt wood. Antimicrobial, fungicide, dermo-purifying, antirheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antitoxic and healing.
