Grapefruit

Grapefruit is native to China, but is now grown in temperate climate zones around the world. From its peel essential oils are used mainly for their antidepressant power and their ability to increase immune defences. There are different varieties of grapefruit. The most common are Citrus maxima, Citrus decumana and Citrus grandis.

Pink grapefruit is a hybrid resulting from the fusion of orange and traditional grapefruit. The taste is less bitter and the skin thinner, but it is different especially in composition and therefore in properties. In fact it contains less Vitamin C and more sugar.

It stimulates the digestive system and is useful in cases of digestive ailments: in fact, the grapefruit is rich in citric acid which stimulates the production of digestive enzymes, without making the stomach acidic.

100 g of grapefruit (about half a grapefruit) contain 41 calories and being rich in fibre, it is nutritious and satiating.
