Cascara buckthorn

Anthraquinone laxative stimulating digestive functions.
Anthraquinone laxative facilitates defecation but to a lesser degree than other laxatives in its class since it is difficult, in therapeutic doses, to stimulate colic spasms. Cascara preparations are used alone or in combination with drugs that have a similar action, such as laxatives in the treatment of chronic constipation. In particular, the plant appears to be effective in chronic functional constipation in the elderly and pre-endoscopic washing of the colon. It is administered mostly in a single dose in the evening, although the best results are achieved by taking small doses after meals (cholagogue action). It is advised not to use high doses trying to enhance the effect, as it may cause inflammation of the intestine.
